We are proud to highlight the success of recent graduate Ethan Harned '25.
Throughout his undergraduate career at Notre Dame, Ethan was an advocate, researcher, and practitioner of integrating compassion into the global health and palliative care field. He is heavily involved with Global Partners in Care and the Eck Institute for Global Health at Notre Dame and draws heavily upon his enriching experiences working throughout Africa to provide rigorous quantitative and qualitative data on the development and implementation of palliative care models.
“I took many courses on different aspects of compassionate care, including the Introduction to Hospice and Palliative Care class. Using this experience, I pursued professional opportunities in global pediatric palliative care service, advocacy, and research. My professional work and courses in pediatric palliative care and compassionate care in medicine served as the basis for my capstone in the minor.”
His capstone project, “The Critical Role of Children’s Palliative Care in Public Health: An Analysis of Pediatric Palliative Care Programming in Bloemfontein, South Africa,” illustrates the critical role palliative care services play in establishing compassionate public health programming and highlights a gap in knowledge on the design process for compassionate public health programs.
Ethan’s hard work and dedication will bring him to India this fall. He is a Fulbright-Nehru Fellow, and will spend this upcoming year “continuing this work by conducting research through the Fulbright Program, looking at how to implement palliative care programs for adolescents and young adults in India.” He will also continue his compassion science education through the Center for Compassionate Leadership's certificate training program.

As of this month, Ethan has been accepted into the MD/MPH program at the University of Miami. Congratulations Ethan!
