The central mission of the Hillebrand Center for Compassionate Care in Medicine is to advance the theory and practice of compassionate care in medicine and to promote effective communication skills in physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

The center's mission is really two-fold. First, the center  provides undergraduate students who will be entering medical school and other health professions with a solid foundation in compassionate care and medical interpersonal skills before they pursue graduate medical training. Additionally, along with special courses designed for this purpose, the center also conducts research in the science of compassionate care, networks with local and national organizations to foster compassionate care in medicine, and provides continuing education opportunities to practicing physicians, nurses, and other professionals supporting caring practice in the helping professions.

The center's mission is closely aligned with the University's mission and vision.
