While many math majors spend their time pondering about complex mathematical equations, senior Alex Jarocki also spends several hours a week volunteering at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC). “Although I am a math major, I am very interested in pursuing a career in medicine,” explained Jarocki. “I had some friends who volunteered at the local hospitals, so I thought I would try it and see how I liked it. I also thought this would be a good way to give back to the community.”
Jarocki has volunteered at SJRMC since his sophomore year. He started in the emergency room department, changing over rooms and preparing them for incoming patients. He now works in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), where he gives patient updates from the doctors and nurses to the patient’s family members. He has even had the opportunity to watch a few surgeries, including a gall bladder removal and hernia repair.
His efforts and commitment to the hospital have not gone unnoticed. “Alex's positivity and hard work will truly be missed when he graduates. It has been an honor having him in PACU. I cannot say enough good things about him,” said Billie King, PACU Department Secretary. “Alex is one of the finest young men I've had the pleasure of meeting. He is exceptional,” said Denise Berscheit, Director of Volunteer Services.
Like many Notre Dame students, volunteering at SJRMC is only one of the many commitments in Jarocki’s busy schedule. He works 18 hours a week for OIT, both at the Learning Spaces dispatch counter in DeBartolo Hall and the data center on campus. He is also a member of the World Taekwondo Federation Club and will test for his black belt soon.
Jarocki is still figuring out his post-graduation plans, but will likely work towards applying for medical school in the next few years. His experience at SJRMC played a role in making that decision. “This has been a great opportunity,” he said. “I would recommend it to any students, especially if they are interested in medical school or science.” It is clear that whatever path Jarocki chooses, he will follow it with a positive attitude and great work ethic, ensuring his success in his future endeavors.
